A Civil War Living History Event!

Historic Dumfries, Virginia, Inc is pleased to host a Civil War Living History Event in Merchant Park on Saturday, October 6th. This family-friendly, educational, and fun event allows you to explore civil war camp life.

Brent Reidenbach Reenactor/Living Historian – aka John A. Jolly – Co G, 5th Texas, Hood’s Texas Brigade will share his experience and knowledge about the civil war, infantry techniques and life, and camp conditions. You’ll find him camped at Merchant Park, by the Weems-Botts Museum, on the corner of Duke and Cameron Streets in Dumfries.

Brent states: “John Alexander Jolly was born about 1836 in Anderson County, South Carolina. Sometime in 1860, Johnny moved to Texas and settled in Milam County, Texas. In July 1861, he joined the Milam County Grays which became Co G, 5th Texas, Hood’s Texas Brigade. Johnny died on 2 July 1863 at the battle of Gettysburg during Hood’s attack – his whereabouts are currently unknown. By portraying John Jolly, my intent is to provide visitors to the Weems-Botts Museum a look into the daily life of a member of Hood’s Texas Brigade and by extension the life of a Confederate soldier during the Civil War.

Please feel free to visit me the first weekend of every month at the Weems-Botts Museum in Dumfries, Virginia.”

This absolutely free event is open to the public and runs from 1:00 pm—5:00 pm. Stop by for a few minutes or a few hours enjoying this great nation’s history! For more information, call Historic Dumfries at 703 – 221 – 2218.
